I think you are talking about Memorial Edition (Golden Age Arc movies + deleted scenes and some updated models). I love 1997 series and memorial edition but memorial edition isn't really an upgraded/updated version of 1997 series. Both cut a huge chunk of the story that you are going to find in Manga only.
