I've been saying this since the beginning. It's a great film, but it's not a great tonal fit for Star Wars. Star Wars is campy and saccharine-dripping-optimism. The Last Jedi was a bit grittier, bitter, and introspective. Not that Star Wars hasn't explored sadness and bitterness before, but it was always done with a clear, underlying optimism.

The Last Jedi isn’t perfect, morally, spiritually or aesthetically. But I think it’s the best Star Wars film since the original trio, far outdistancing the prequels and bettering its more recent peers, too. This chapter of the saga rediscovers something that, if I may say, gives an old reviewer a new hope.Poe was right to destroy the Dreadnaught. The movie wants him to be wrong but forgets to prove it. So we get Leia telling Poe he was wrong, only for that to immediately be disproven by imperial space chase.
